Updates for the Florida Seagrass Conservation Information System

The Florida Seagrass Conservation Information System is a database of current and completed seagrass conservation projects. We have recently made several changes to make navigation, submission, and searching easier for users.

In response to increasing recognition of the importance of seagrasses to the marine environment, researchers in both public and private organizations are conducting numerous conservation projects throughout Florida. In partnership with the local Web development company, DataGlyphics, FWRI developed a Web-based database as a resource for scientists working on similar projects and for anyone seeking information on conserving this extremely valuable habitat.

The Florida Seagrass Conservation Information System has been online for almost a year, and thanks in part to users’ suggestions, we have implemented some exciting changes:

  • Created a new home page to allow database users to see all available options

  • Added new categories to the criteria search page, including water body, keyword, agency, status, and contact to the previous criteria of county, region, and project type

  • Added a short project description to the search results page, enabling users to determine which projects they would like to research further; details still accessible by clicking on the project name

  • Added Editing Instructions and Submitting Instructions articles to provide assistance to those who need help submitting or editing projects

  • Changed certain fields on the Submitting and Editing pages from text entry to pick-lists (contact, agency, region, county, and water body) to allow for more precise entry and more accurate searching

  • Increased number of counties and regions per project to allow inclusion of those extending beyond our fixed regions (can now choose any or all of the 35 counties and 6 regions
Please visit the Florida Seagrass Conservation Information System to see these and other changes. Additional information on the database is available in the Background and Information and Field Descriptions articles. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for improvements, please contact us at seagrass@MyFWC.com.
